# Changelog (whole project)

The project version in `VERSION.md` is the Unix client version, which is also the release tag (`tags/vX.Y.Z`). The Windows client has its own version in `windows/VERSION.md`; it is mentioned here when it ships in a release. This file summarises; the details are in `unix/CHANGELOG.md` and `windows/CHANGELOG.md`. The newest entry is first.

## 3.8.1 - 2026-10-19 (pending: uncommitted, not yet tagged)

Repository split. No change to the report format (data version stays `v3.8.0`).

- Repository: the Unix client moved into `unix/`, beside `windows/`. `t/` (Unix tests, with the Windows tests in `t/windows/`), `tools/`, `Documentation/`, `server/`, `reference/` and `WorkingNotes/` stay at the root and are never installed on a host. A Unix host checks out `^/testing/unix` or `^/stable/unix` (or a tag's `unix/`) into the same install directory, so its tree layout is unchanged.
- Unix: `sysinfo_update` and the default `svn_url` follow the new layout. See `unix/CHANGELOG.md`.
- Windows: the client (1.0.0) ships in the release as `sysinfo-client-windows.zip`; only its tests moved. See `windows/CHANGELOG.md`.
- Tools: `make_release` builds the tarball from `unix/` and the zip from `windows/`.
- Docs: top `README.md` is an overview, with the Unix content in `unix/README.md`; `Documentation/Spec.md` describes the new layout.
- Docs: top `README.md` gains a "Release channels" section (stable and testing download locations for the tarball and zip, with `example.org` placeholders); the Unix installer and Windows READMEs point to it.
- Unix: `configure` is now a wrapper around dsEdit (a pinned `svn:externals` directory, bug 212); the installer's merge step moved to `installer/mergeconfig`. See `unix/CHANGELOG.md`.
- Unix: `sysinfo_update` v2.2.0 checks the published `.sha256` against a recorded one before downloading the tarball (bug 207); see `unix/CHANGELOG.md`.
- Unix: no built-in release URLs (see `unix/CHANGELOG.md`); the URLs come from the seed or the config.
- Tests: Unix suite 334 tests, Windows suite 99 passed under `pwsh`.

## 3.8.0 - 2026-10-14

The v3.8.0 rewrite, in beta from 2026-10-15 (r276 to r283). Summarised; see `unix/CHANGELOG.md`.

- Unix: new framework (`sysinfo_client` runs sensors as subprocesses), unified sensors with storage, SMART, identity and havirt data, new `installer/setup` and `sysinfo_update` with v3.7.1 migration, UTF-8 transport fix.
- Windows: client planned and built during the beta (bug 211); not part of the r276-r283 commits.
- Spec: `Documentation/Spec.md` is the contract for both clients (Windows is section 7).
